Toes are not weight-bearing bones and can often heal on their own with rest and at-home care. However, it is essential to see a healthcare provider to undergo radiological investigations and further course of treatment accordingly.

Suspecting a Toe Fracture?

If you suspect a fracture due to restricted movement, pain, and inflammation, you can create a buddy splint at home to keep your injured toe stable.

Follow below steps for buddy taping:

1. Prepare the Splint: Use an ice cream stick or a piece of cardboard slightly longer than the broken toe.
2. Position the Splint: Place the splint so that it supports both the injured toe and the adjacent healthy toe.
3. Secure the Splint: Wrap both the toes and splint with gauze piece or roller bandage and apply sticking tape. Use micropore 3M sticking tape for better grip.
4. Prevent Moisture: Place a small piece of cotton between your toes to prevent moisture buildup, changing it daily.

Dealing with Cuts or Open Wounds:

1. Clean the Wound: Use an antiseptic solution and clean the surrounding area with alcohol swabs or spirit.
2. Apply Ointment: Use Betadine ointment on the wound.
3. Dress the Wound: Cover it with a gauze piece and secure it.

Toe Pain Management:

You may take anti-inflammatory medicines to reduce pain and inflammation. Ibuprofen is commonly recommended. Dosage guidelines for ibuprofen are as follows:

• Not recommended for children under 6 months unless directed by a pediatrician.
• Dosage is based on weight: approximately 5-10 mg/kg.
• Can be taken every 6-8 hours, with a maximum of 40 mg/kg/day.

Footwear:

You might find it painful to wear regular shoes. Opt for wider shoes, which may be more comfortable.

• Initial Recovery: Pain and swelling should subside within a week.
• Complete Healing: Most broken toes take six to eight weeks to heal completely.
