Introduction
The average "normal" body temperature is around 98.6°F (37°C), but it can vary depending on age and other factors. You can measure temperature using a thermometer orally (keeping the tip under the tongue), rectally, or in the armpit (axilla).
Generally, a low-grade fever (99.1 to 100.4°F; 37.3 to 38.0°C) with mild signs and symptoms can subside by taking one shot of Paracetamol (15mg/kg body weight). It can be repeated every 6-8 hours if fever spikes occur. Keep a fever chart to track your temperature. If the fever persists or in the case of moderate (100.6 to 102.2°F; 38.1 to 39.0°C) or high-grade fever (102.4 to 105.8°F; 39.1 to 41°C), it's recommended to visit a doctor for an examination and investigations. This will help start the specific treatment based on the reports, such as oral or intravenous antibiotics in case of infection, and provide a proper diagnosis like viral fever, bacterial fever, or pyrexia of unknown origin.
Ways to Get Rid of a Fever Fast
1. Hydration
You've probably seen on the doctor's prescription to take POOF – plenty of oral fluids. Fever causes fluid loss that can lead to dehydration, so drink water, juices, or other fluids to replenish fluids and electrolytes. For children under 12 months, use an oral rehydration solution like Pedialyte.
2. Tepid Sponging
This method helps bring down fever quickly. If the fever is moderate or high-grade, grab a washcloth, soak it in lukewarm water, and place it on your forehead, the nape of your neck, axilla, and inguinal region for 10-15 minutes.
3. Light Clothing
Avoid using quilts or heavy blankets. Wear light, breathable clothes to allow heat exchange. You want your body heat to escape, not stick around.
4. Over-the-Counter Meds
Ibuprofen (400 mg) or Paracetamol (500mg) stat can help bring the fever down in case of adults. Adult maximum dose of Ibuprofen is 400mg every 8 hours; adult maximum dose for Paracetamol is 1gm every 6 hours (Reference NHS.UK) depending upon the temperature reading. For pediatric use, follow the dosage instructions on the bottle, and you'll be golden. If you're not sure about the dosage, or if the fever doesn't subside, consult your doctor for advice.
5. Rest Up
Your body needs energy to fight off whatever's causing the fever. Binge-watch that new series or dive into a good book and let your body do its thing. Rest is your best friend right now.
6. Light Meals
Keep your meals light and easy to digest. Soups, broths, and simple carbs are your go-tos. Your stomach might not be up for a big feast, so take it easy. In cases of fever like jaundice and typhoid, the liver and intestines are affected, respectively. Fatty foods are a strict no in any type of fever.
7. Room Temperature
Keep your room nice and cool. Open a window, turn on a fan, or crank up the AC if you have it. A cool environment can help your body temperature go down.
So, there you have it. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and take it easy. You'll be back to your regular, awesome self in no time. Get well soon!
